Just keep swimming

with one comment

I’ve noticed a theme when I’m on the phone with current and (hopefully) future clients. They’re all saying that they’re not sure how things are going to pan out with the current economic snafu, and therefore they’re holding off on new marketing. To a certain extent this makes sense. We market when we have something new to say, a new product, new service, new location etc. Right now business expansion is pretty much kaput, so not much new going on. But this can also be counter productive. Right now your clients/customers are looking for ways to be more efficient and make their dollar go further. If they’re willing to change brand loyalties, how will they find you if you don’t market? Also, businesses that haven’t planned for the recession may not be around for much longer, which opens up the market to their old customers. How will they find you if you don’t market? There are several outstanding articles out there in the blogosphere on this…

This is your opportunity

This isn’t the first recession I’ve seen, but it’s certainly the most talked about. It seems as time marches on the news media gets better about driving the story and worse about reporting the story.  Don’t get me wrong. The credit crunch is real and it affects businesses in real ways, most of them bad. But just like investing in stocks or real estate where the mantra is sell on good news, buy on bad, investing in your business should be the same way. Things are tough right now all over, which means several things.

  • Maybe a few of your competitors will go away.
  • Maybe a company you’ve been chomping at the bit to get into will be willing to see you now that they’re looking for alternatives.
  • Maybe you’ll be able to fill that position for a retoucher that you’ve been trying to fill forever.
  • Maybe you’ll be able to purchase the building that your studio is in since the landlord is over leveraged.

Remember, we were deep in the throes of the great depression when WWII rolled around.  We were out of work, in debt and still managed to come together, save the world and rebuild the global economy. We’ll do it again.
